the fire dragon curse may not have been a curse at all. But likely a protection the fire dragon king gave her upon birth. Given that dragons are pretty protective of their children in many modes of fiction, it's not a stretch.

Like set the protection to go off on anyone that wasn't the fire dragon king or lumil.

Melfina may be a goddess but she's not omniscient after all.

I was thinking the same thing. In a fantasy world like this, I wouldn't be surprised if Dragon kind can freely transform into humans.
